Cyber Security: From Buzzword to Everyday Reality

By DCS|7th January 2026

It wasn’t that long ago that cyber security was seen as more of a buzzword than a business essential. Something for the IT department to worry about, while the rest of us carried on with our day-to-day work.

Fast forward to now, and it’s clear that times have changed. Cyber threats have become part of our everyday reality. No matter the size or sector, every organisation is at risk – and recent events have made that painfully clear.

The big names making the headlines

In the past year, some big-names have shown exactly how costly a cyberattack can be — not just in terms of downtime, but in money lost and reputation shaken. Marks & Spencer, for example, saw a ransomware attack that’s expected to cost them around £300 million in lost profits. Their share price dropped, customers were inconvenienced, and trust took a hit as issues with online orders and payments came to light.

Then there’s Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Their August 2025 attack forced a near-month-long production halt in the UK, and to stabilise their supply chain they’ve secured a £1.5 billion government-backed loan guarantee. The disruption affected not just JLR itself, but many suppliers depending on their operations. Every day without production carries huge cost.

The Co-operative breach also hit more than just systems and data — it damaged credibility with customers who expect their financial and personal information to be safe. Even if the monetary loss is less public, the reputational damage can last far longer.

And when the big players are suffering like this, it underscores that no business is safe. But many smaller firms don’t show up in the news – yet statistics suggest they’re being hit just as often, and in many cases more severely relative to their resources.

Some UK-wide stats that bring this into perspective

  • Around 43% of UK businesses reported that they experienced some kind of cyber breach or attack in the past 12 months. That’s over 600,000 businesses.
  • Medium and large firms are particularly exposed: 67% of medium businesses and 74% of large businesses reported breaches in that same period.
  • Over the last five years, 52% of UK businesses have suffered at least one cyberattack, with losses totalling approximately £44 billion in revenue over that period.

Costs are more than just financial. A single breach often leads to loss of customer trust, negative press, potential regulatory fines, and damage to brand reputation — all of which can be harder to quantify, but equally damaging.

Why cyber security can’t be an afterthought

The truth is the way we work has changed. Businesses are now more connected and more dependent on digital systems than ever before. That means more opportunities for innovation – but also more potential entry points for cyber criminals.

Cyber security isn’t about fear, it’s about awareness. It’s about making sure we have the right defences in place, the right training for staff, and the right mindset to take these risks seriously.

We protect what we can see

Here’s the irony: we’re very good at protecting what’s in front of us. We lock our doors at night, we insure our homes and cars, we set alarms and keep spare keys hidden. We take those steps without thinking twice, because the risks are visible and tangible.

But when it comes to our digital lives – our data, systems, and identities – we often take fewer precautions. Maybe it’s because we can’t physically see them. But they’re just as real, and just as valuable.

It’s time we treat our digital assets with the same care we give to our physical ones. Because in today’s world, the things we can’t see are often the most important to protect.

About Skyguard365

At DCS, we work with organisations every day to help them strengthen their cyber security posture. We know that protecting data and systems isn’t about adding a single product or tool – it’s about having layers of protection that work together. Providing solutions for both businesses and charities.

We start with Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which brings a strong foundation of security into everyday work. It includes features like Intune for secure device management, Azure Information Protection to control and label sensitive data, and Conditional Access to make sure only trusted users and devices can reach company resources. These built-in tools give businesses enterprise-level protection without the complexity.

On top of that, we provide an additional layer of security through a comprehensive protection suite that covers full-disk encryption, email filtering and threat detection, automated patch management, and 24/7/365 managed detection and response. All of this is managed through a single, centralised console, giving complete visibility and control over your environment.

We also ensure that your data is safe and recoverable by configuring reliable backups for your critical systems and cloud data. Because prevention is key, but recovery is essential.

Everything we deliver comes with ongoing support from our in-house team, so you’re never left on your own. There are no upfront costs – just a simple, transparent per-user model that scales with your business.

At the end of the day, cyber security isn’t a one-off project; it’s an ongoing process of awareness, protection and improvement. Our goal at DCS is to make that process straightforward and effective, so you can focus on running your business with confidence.
