Can my business claim Research & Development (R&D) Tax Relief?

By Theresa Clark|22nd September 2023

Research and development tax relief

Research and Development Tax Relief is a valuable UK Government tax initiative set up in 2000 to encourage British businesses to invest in Research and Development activities, enabling those businesses to obtain considerable financial support for their innovation-based projects, remaining competitive within their sector, and keeping the UK at the forefront of technological and scientific innovations and development across the globe.

Simplified: If you’re an SME and have less than 500 staff and a turnover of under €100m or a balance sheet total under €86m and have invested time & money in developing your business in an innovative, scientific or technological way, to create a new process, product, solution or service; or, have you discovered an advance in your field – and have gone on to improve an existing issue – then you may be able to claim.

How DCS can help:

DCS has partnered with specialists who have years of experience in providing a fully managed Research and Development (R&D) tax relief consultancy service. Understanding that every business’ innovation approach is unique, as are your business needs. A one-size-fits-all approach to R&D consultancy never works.
They want to help businesses make the most of their innovation; priding themselves on delivering market-leading technical tax advice in plain English and providing clients with practical and actionable business outcomes tailored to client needs. Offering tailored advice and assistance throughout the process and providing clear guidance and consultancy on all aspects of claiming R&D Tax Relief. Services extend beyond helping with the claim process and also providing ongoing advice and support for your business’s future claims.

As a DCS customer, why not speak to your account manager to discuss whether you may be eligible? Your DCS account manager will be more than happy to provide our trusted partner with an initial overview of your business and potential claim so they can introduce themselves to discuss it further with you. Since first working with them in 2018, we are thrilled many of our DCS customers have had successful claims.

The 7 steps of the R&D fully managed process:

  1. Client Instruction Form/Contracts:
Your contract is signed, instructing our partner to undertake R&D Tax Relief Services.
  2. Client Activation:
A member of the Technical Team will call your main point of contact to establish the best time to start your R&D Tax Relief process and set up a Technical Call.
  3. Technical Call (30 minutes):
A member of the Auditing Team will conduct your Technical Call with the relevant member(s) of staff within your company to identify key staff and expand upon key projects & timescales to prepare for the audit meeting. After this call, a Pre-Audit Email is sent with all the relevant information before the meeting takes place.
  4. Audit Meeting (1 day):
The audit meeting will consist of a two-part process:
    1) Project information gathering.
    2) Cost & financial information/documentation collation.
  5. Post Audit Document Collection:
Once the audit has taken place your R&D Auditor will send the relevant members of your team a post-audit email which outlines any further documents required to process your claim (Invoices, Payroll, Financials, etc.)
  6. Validation of the Working Papers:
Before submitting to HMRC, you will be sent a full copy of the Working Papers for each relevant claim year to verify. The papers will detail the project(s) information and benefit analysis. Once you have validated the Working Papers, your submission to HMRC will be actioned.
  7. Your submission to HMRC:
Once your Working Papers and documentation have been submitted to HMRC, you will await their response and validation of the benefit; this usually takes 6 to 8 weeks.

Why choose DCS Ltd to help with your R&D claim:

DCS only partners with trusted 3rd parties and choosing someone to look after your R&D claim is no different, they are experts in their field with a very high success rate – they are ready to take on the hard work on your behalf, an R&D claim can be time-consuming and overwhelming when taking it on yourself. They have years of R&D experience and know what boxes need ticking and more importantly, the areas where many other businesses are losing out on extra money that they could be claiming for. There is no upfront money to be paid – only taking their fee after the R&D claim has been paid. They don’t want to waste anyone’s time and, therefore, are so confident in the claims they submit that if at any point HMRC requests their payment back, as long as there has been no issue with the evidence you have provided for submission, they will reimburse you any fees they have taken.

Every year, HMRC sets aside £4.5b for R&D Tax Relief. Find out more from Gov.uk
